Sounds like the ever-popular LT Winmodem. I don't know for sure
that all PCI modems are Winmodems, but the vast majority seem to be.
Probably the best external serial modem is the USR Courier v.Everything;
a more reasonably-priced solution would be the SupraExpress 56e, on
clearance (last I checked) for around $50.
