I'm trying to install parts of Mandrake 5.3 on an old 486 w/o a cd-rom
drive. I initially figured that an FTP install would be a good way to
do it--I'll put the CD in my other machine (also running Mandrake 5.3),
and tell the install program to get the files from /mnt/cdrom (which is
accessible from a non-anonymous login). To make sure that this would
work, I ftp'd from a windows box, and was able to log in, set the
directory, and get files from the CD.
However, when I tell the installation program to get files from
192.168.1.5 in /mnt/cdrom (or /mnt/cdrom/RedHat), and give it the
appropriate username and password, it connects and shows "getting
base/hdlist" for a second or two, and then returns to the screen where
it asks for the FTP host and directory. No error message is displayed
on the main terminal, or on either of the log displays (Alt-F3 and -F4),
making it pretty tricky to troubleshoot.
Any ideas what I'm missing, or another good way to take care of this?
Thanks for any input!
