I've found that for new users it is easier to use the GUI instead of the
command prompt to accomplish installations. For instance, if you're using KDE,
go to the file manager and right click on a tar ball and select archiver. This
function will uncompress the files for you to a desired directory. Or, if you
have an RPM, you can use KPackage to perform the install, it'll even test it
for you so you can see before hand if there is a problem before anything is
changed.
