That is an option, but I opted to have it keep the focus as the last window clicked on. > That's another reason I like KDE....I can move my mouse off the window > I'm using and still keep that as my "active" window. :-) That's how I have WindowMaker set up as well; it's the default, even. I did solve this problem, though... I noticed the lack of the resizebar along the bottom of the kmail windows, and I remembered that I can disable it from the Ctrl+Esc window control menu (under Attributes...). The default panel (Window Attributes) had the Disalbe Resizebar box checked, and I unchecked it. I thought, "I wonder what else is checked that shouldn't be..." and went to the Advanced Options pane. There I found the Don't Let It Take Focus box checked as well! I turned that sucker off, and now it works very nicely.
