Hello list, OK, I had a problem whereby after loading 8.2 onto my XP machine from downloaded disks that strange things happened which I detailed in a previous posting included below. At this time I did not include all errors but have this time hoping they may be connected.
Previously, Civilme kindly suggested that the disks might be corrupted but gave a command to try but the command showed the components were already installed. Well I bought the power pack edition and guess what, yes, the same thing happened. Fresh install. No update of any kind, setup kmail, personalised a few settings, opened Gkrellm and got the message "Can't seem to find APM" but Mandrake control shows it installed OK. Just like last time. No matter what I do it displays some options, time, uptime are two, but the CPU registers no activity when top shows much. But more importantly when I went to reboot the option had already gone. The button is no longer there, only the button for restart x-server. So far the boot menu after POST remains and is uncorrupted. Shutdown can therefore only be activated as root. This is very disappointing in some respects but pleasing to find it is not disk related. XP perhaps. <SNIP> from my own previous posting Specification:- ASUS A7V266-E motherboard, Athlon XP 1800+, 256Mb DDR Hynix memory @ 266MHz, Primary drive, Seagate 40GB HDD (loads of space, M$ XP) Secondary, Seagate 10GB HDD, (loads of space, Mandrake 8.2), ASUS AGP-V7100 Pro/T NVIDIA Geforce2 MX 400 TV out, CMEDIA 6 Dolby Surround Sound 5.1, Samsung 16x DVD - 48x CD, ASUS 32x writer - 12x re-writer - 40x reader, Cable modem, Lynksys Router and networked (only fully under MicroSnot) to the other machine with the same problem.
