Couple of things.

An XP install can mess with the Hard disk partition table (swap the numbers 
around on it so hda6 becomes hda7 and vice-versa) See earlier posts this list 
by Civileme. If this has occurred you will have lost more than just LILO. 
Thats why installing XP before Linux is recommended. I appreciate it was a 
running dual boot machine. What it boils down to is you better have good 
backups.

The splash screen that was talked about is the first screen that loads when 
you start an install. It has a pic of a penguin and the Mandrake logo among 
other things. It says down the bottom to hit [F1] for other options. Do this 
before it times out... then you can follow instructions at your leisure and 
start the rescue option which allows you to re-install LILO as a sub-option.
