[newbie] Services

I have set LInux up on several machines on a Novell network.  They are causing broadcast storms and sending packets like you would not beleive.  Is there a way to stop the services that are started at bootup.  i.e.  NFS, RIP, etc...   Thanks in advance     Leonard W.
