At work I have been using a hosts file on a Win98 machine to effectively
block ads. I tried this on MD8.2 using 127.0.0.3 (as recommended by a site
that provided the hosts file) as the IP. The rationale was that since I'm
running Apache, I needed to use an address other than 127.0.0.1.

Well, anytime I view a site that has something blocked by the hosts file,
I get a 404 error displayed there the page/media should be. Also, if I
visit the root of a blocked site like www.msn.com, my web root gets
displayed. I tried changing 127.0.0.3 to 0.0.0.0, but got the same result.

So, I briefly tried squid and squidguard. I couldn't get squidguard set up
and before I invest my time, I was wondering if anybody has used it to
block Internet ads and how it works. Or, is there another tool I should be
using?

TIA,
Todd
