I'd had problems since my last crash - before changing the file system - so I 
tried this.  It appears to have worked, as the freezing seems to have 
stopped.  I was so impressed that I tried the same solution on OpenOffice, 
and that seems to have worked too.  All the problems with printing and with 
copying have disappeared.
