Most likely your network isn't starting at boot.
As "su/root" do: "service network restart" and check the messages if eth0 
shows up O.K.
If it doesn't; go to the Control Centre again and redo your nework settings. 
BTW ussually you need to use "dhcpd" to connect to a cable server.

As for the Xircom modem: I haven't been able to get it working, doubt it ever 
will. The ethernet card works fine though.
