As an update.  Here is the valid portion of auth.log.  Looks like it may be 
an SSH config problem?

Aug 20 23:21:32 pengo sshd[5534]: error: Bind to port 22 on 10.0.0.10 failed: 
Address already in use.
Aug 20 23:21:32 pengo sshd[5534]: fatal: Cannot bind any address.
Aug 20 23:21:37 pengo sshd[5536]: refused connect from 10.0.0.101 (10.0.0.101)

ListenAddress defaults to 0.0.0.0.  I changed it to the machine's address 
thinking that would do the trick, but no...
