I just decided to play with gdm to see if it had improved. (Back at
MDK7, I tried it, and I couldn't figure out how to log in.)

So:
$ gdm
Only root wants to run gdm
$ su
Password:
# gdm

Up pops a curses-style window, telling me that gdm couldn't connect to
the X-server on :0, did I want to create another. I said no. It came
back and said it failed, then asked me again. I said no, it failed,
asked again. I gave in and said yes. The display flickered a bit, then I
got an error message telling me the X-server on :0 was busy so it
created another one. Then, it asked me to log in. I couldn't figure out
how to terminate the X-server, so I switched back to X-server :0 via
CTRL-ALT-F7. I couldn't figure out how to get back to the X-server on
:1.

So how can I do that (if it's even possible)?

Thanks!!!
