kmail requires that you use your ISP's mail server and it will send/receive all mail from there..
the postfix/sendmail/exim/qmail way is to actually set up your own mail server..(but you can still tell it to relay mail to your ISP for delivery.) I always setup my own mail server, its fun, its easy, and I have postfix setup to work with amavis and filescan to protect all my windows boxs from email virus's... its pretty easy to setup postfix and there are a ton of online docs about it. (postfix.org) postfix is far easier and more secure..(and smaller and much faster) then sendmail. I learned about sendmail from when I was a redhat man, (back in the RH4.x days) but once I tried postfix, I never looked back. On the other hand, if you don't have any need for any of this, use your ISP's mail server, you are paying for it anyway. rgds Frank -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Larry Theden Sent: Wednesday, 11 September 2002 1:35 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] Mail server vs. Kmail or such? What advantage is there to setting up procmail/sendmail/etc., as opposed to simply running Kmail, Evolution, or any of a dozen other mail apps? Thanks, Larry
