Michael: You're right that the problem is after lilo.
Brian: I ran the upgrade and it completed -- but no change.
John: Failsafe boots ok but doesn't find or solve the problem
Tom: Updating lilo doesn't solve the problem, but
experimenting with it proves that the problem is after it.
et: I waited long enough -- about two hours when I went to lunch.
Using failsafe -- or simply changing the linux section of lilo from
append="devfs-mount quiet"
to
append="devfs-nomount"
causes different scripts to run, and either of them will work and
leave everything appearing to work ok.
But that's just bypassing the problem, not solving it.
I may have to bite the bullet and start fresh -- after making sure
all the data is backed up.
