I have a Sony CD-RW drive and a 'generic' DVD drive (I think it is a 'HI-VAL' or something like that.) and both work great.
Most IDE CD/CDRW/DVD/etc drives are fully ATAPI compliant and should work find. The CDRECORD web site maintains a list of drives that are known not to work with cd record, but it's a pretty short list and most of the drives listed are old and out of production.
