First make sure it is a hardware modem (try to query the modem from ppp setup) make sure it is installed and configured correctly. I had trouble with getting my modems to work, external and internal hardware until 8.2. My external US Robotics works great now. USR 5610 internal I KNOW is a hardware modem. Others i do not know....
