I have an Diamond TNT2 and have never had a problem with it at all, and as
shown below from the FAQ on nvidia's web page, it's pretty clear that
there is indeed acceleration. Get full details and the modified drivers
from below.
Note: Not only did nvidia GPL their drivers, 3DFX has not, and will only
support linux and hardware acceleration with binary releases at this time.
So whereever you heard this, it is no longer true at all...

Q. What are the differences in the 2D portion of the X server from the
3.3.3.1 version?
A. More 2D acceleration has been added. Specifically stippled pattern
fills; the logout screen in KDE was driving me crazy! The glyph
rendering routines have all been hooked and accelerated at a high
level. Some bugs in the video clock routines have been fixed
(some people mentioned mode switches hanging - hopefully fixed). The
X server now recognizes all TNT and TNT2 variants.
Q. How do I get applications to use the 3D hardware
acceleration?
(etc...)
