This fits with the oddity I had in numbering users, already mentioned. I had gone through the home directories and amended them, changing the user number to user name, and setting the group as users. Maybe there's a connection? Anyway, I've set the group of mine to 'anne' now, and after re-logging in I find that they are no longer lined up - they are randomly scattered all over the desktop. I've tidied them up, logged out and back in, but they go back to the same crazy places. I seems also, that they are snapping to a grid. I wonder if that's a clus? Anne
