You can always recreate the /boot/initrd.img in order to troubleshoot
modules as well ....

mkinitrd /boot/initrd.img 2.4.19-16mdk

...but you have to mv the original one to a different name before hand -
and have a bootable diskette or the CD with you just in case the initrd
hangs the system.
