"message-grapic" and "message" are clearly not text files (I viewed them
with cat - only saw rubbish). The first one's name is rather
graphical... "message-text" contains the following (on my system)

wait 10 seconds for default boot
I imagine from this, and from the "-graphic" (though I admit my total
ignorance), that the three form the frontend to LILO. I suspect that it
is not here that you have to meddle to fix your booting problems.
