I hate to say it, but Mandrake 9.0 lost this battle. I gave up trying
to recompile kernels to fix my problem - I gave Red Hat v8.0 a shot (I
like Gnome anyway)... and voila, no problems with my P4B533-E
motherboard. Works beautifully and runs well. Sorry Mandrake!

Well heck! there's the problem. It wasn't Mandrake at all. You've got a crappy CPU sittin on yer board. As I understand it P4's are good for one thing and one thing only - gaming. If you're running Mandrake or any other flavor of Linux it's a pretty fair bet you're not running it for games. Linux is for work, coding, a little more work, some more coding, learning, geeking about and a bit more coding. With all those P3's, AMD's, Celerons, P2's and yes...even the P1's out there floating about why in the WORLD would anyone want to force something like Mandrake to have to go slumming with a P4 chip? Hell! the P3's way outclass the P4's and the AMD chips totally embarass them.
