I have basically the same situation - but throw a Mac into the picture - we're all using netbios emulation to "share" - DAVE 3.1 on the Mac, Samba 2.2.7a on the linux box, XP and Winders on the others. Accessing the Samba server used to be quite slow - but no, it's not accessing the internet to resolve locally. It's really a matter of tweaking Samba. There are a number of switches that you can modify in your /etc/samba/smb.conf file - but best to use Webmin and SWAT to muck with those particular settings. My defaults for send/recieve buffers used to be 8192, but I doubled 'em (as well as tweak a few other things) but overall, the buffers sending/receiving helped bigtime. Occassionally, the Samba server is still slow to "show up", but in file copies and the likes, it flies.
