One of these days I'm going to truly understand why people seem to think
that installation numbers 4, 5, and 6 are going to somehow magically

As to your problem...

You need to explain a bit more about your network and what things you
have configured and tried.  From your message, it sounds like you've got
another Linux machine in the office there.  Am I correct in reading that
you can ping and connect to the "problem" machine?  What problems come
up when trying FTP?

I really hope you didn't set your hostname to that!  What does
/etc/hosts currently show?  How about ifconfig and route?  Post those
back to the list and maybe we can help out a bit more.

Which looks fine.  We _REALLY_ need to know what's failing in a LOT more
detail before we can even begin finding a solution to your problem. 
With the limited information you provided, there's about 300 things that
could be wrong.
