Just yesterday I installed Mandrake 9.0 on my system. I am using the
KDE desktop.

I was unable to find Abiword in the menu system, and it doesn't come up
when I type abiword in the "run command" line.
/usr/bin/AbiWord

This was the first thing I tried. There is no directory called abiword
in the /usr/bin directory. So far as I'm able to determine, there is no
directory called abiword anywhere on my system.

This is why I can't understand why the Mandrake software installation
tool is claiming that I've already got it.

Any ideas?
rpm -ql abiword
should give you a list of files in the package (assuming the package is abiword.rpm - adjust if necessary).
