[newbie] Converting VHS tapes to VCD or DVD?

A husband and wife at our Linux group is asking if there is easy software 
under Linux to conver older VHS tapes to DVD or VCD...

I've never tried this - always used Mencoder/Mplayer to convert DVD to AVI 
(Divx).
