I've got a full tower Inwin case, the HDD's have plenty of space
around them and are separated by a coupl'a inches (a 4 drive bay).
The cpu is a 1.4 Tbird, one of the hottest AMD's to date, and is
overclocked to 1.53 gig (11.5x133), 1.85v. To keep it cool the
heatsink has a 5000 rpm case fan attached to the original hs fan (ie,
two fans, stacked). To keep the case cool, I have a 10" 110v fan in
the side of the case, which also blows some on the HDD's. The case is
vented at the top, front and rear. The PSU fan also blows out. Lot'sa
airflow, case temps are always the same as ambient room temp with no
'hot spots'.

Still both IBM Deskstars failed. One at 8 months, one at 16
months, both 30 gig, 7200 rpm, 2mb buffer, and used 24x7. While the
cpu is overclocked, the PCI bus the HDD's run on isn't (33.3Mhz).
The voltages to the HDD's are also right on the money and steady as a
rock (Sparkle 300w PSU). The drive that failed at 8 mos. was a
sudden mechanical failure (wouldn't spin up). The other appeared to
be a slowly failing IDE interface (the circuit board on the drive).
I don't believe either drive was ever overheated, and they were
properly fed and cared for.

    The box now has 2, 7200rpm Maxtor's in it ;) .... bigger (40g,
80g), faster, and less expensive than the IBM 30's
