I think if we start from a different perspective, we might be able to
get all your parts back together.
If you can edit the /etc/inittab file and where you see the line:
id:5:initdefault:
Change it to:
id:3:initdefault:
...reboot - and you'll get a text login - BUT don't panic, because you
can make changes here that will start to fix the rest of the problems...
Now, once you've logged in, you can start XWindows with the command:
startx
You'll be presented with the KDE or Gnome2 gui desktop...(or should
be...)
...so try that first, then let's move to part 2.
