You need to use a preamp not only for boosting volume, but also for equalizing the frequency response of the vinyl player head. If you don't do it, the lower frequencies will be too low in volume, while the higher frequencies will be too loud (see for example http://www.paia.com/riaa.htm for a correct vinyl preamp frequency response)

That said, if you listen to your records through the PC speaker, you probably won't notice any difference between a correctly equalized recording and one that is not...
