Right now I am back to 2.4.19 with no ACPI support, so I have to press
the power button after I enter "shutdwon -r now".

A few days ago I was playing the upgrading to kernel-2.4.20 game and I
enabled support to ACPI (APM in reality) and after issuing "shutdown -r
now" I didn't need to press the power button. It powered off
automatically.
