It looks like it was the monitor being asked to try some mode it wasn't happy with.... I managed to borrow another one, hooked it up and all started fine. I changed the resolution back to 800x600 and the original monitor now works. The system is running very slowly -- far more slowly than the Win2k that's on there as well -- but at least I can see what's going on now! Thanks for your time... julian Templeman Consulting Ltd.
