You might not know the answer to whether you installed the closed drivers, but if you installed 8.2 from a boxed set, you probably did. I can tell you the answer if you can email me, or post the contents of, your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. If that is difficult because of the fact you cannot start X, type grep nv /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 at a prompt and tell me what it returns. If it says driver "nvidia", your problem is as I stated above.
