Well, the new kernel is going to cause a problem with the proprietary drivers
from nVidia's website. They are going to have to be recompiled against the
new kernel, which is very easy, as long as you have the right tools
installed.

You might not know the answer to whether you installed the closed drivers, but
if you installed 8.2 from a boxed set, you probably did.

I can tell you the answer if you can email me, or post the contents of, your
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.

If that is difficult because of the fact you cannot start X, type

grep nv /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 at a prompt and tell me what it returns. If it
says driver "nvidia", your problem is as I stated above. There are a couple
of ways to deal with the fix, but I'll save that until we confirm the
situation.
