Afaik it is a new standard set by the X-Free86 consortium for the new
XWindow 4.2.x (i hope thats the right version #) graphics output
system. Hm... In simpler terms: XF86Config is the old "standard" cfg
file for Xwindow up to ver 3.x.x IIRC. When XWindow 4.x.x came around
they needed to add new parameters to that config file. Instead of
re-writing it from scratch they appended a new file with some of the old
parameters & some new ones added in for newer graphics cards. If you
compare the two files they are nearly identicaly in all respects except
that the XF86Config-4 one contains some newer modelines & some other
techy errata that means nothing to anyone outside the Consortium... or
Civilme perhaps. <G>
