I look at the cpio man page and there are all sorts of different formats and to me (and probably a lot of newbies) it's more complicated than it needs to be. Besides I don't think you save anything with it as compared to tar. But there are lots of people (bsd types maybe) that are really conversant with cpio. I figured it would complicate matters more if it were brought up on a newbie list :).
