Curious question ...

I took a Linux server configuration class this past week, and one of the students brought up an interesting question that the instructor could not answer. Can linux be put on a USB hard drive and made bootable from it? She says that she has Window$ machines that are capable of this, and I was curious if it could be done in linux. If so, how?

Thanks!
