It didn't work for me either.
My first solution was to insert the line:
service mysql start
at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local
It worked.
Then, reading this list, I learned of chkconfig. Enter:
chkconfig --level 35 mysql on
My recommendation is to use chkconfig and forget about adding lines to
rc.local. Anyway, they both work.
