Be that as it may, there are open-source alternatives to pkzip under Windows as well - but they probably won't do encryption. There used to be a Unix command named 'crypt' but because of over- reactions regarding so-called "munitions" there doesn't seem to be an equivalent in Linux. But file-based encryptioo should be the primary task of such a tool; archiving is secondary. In other words, you shouldn't "need" pkzip because it can encrypt a .zip file - you can store the data any way you want, archived or no, and then just selectively encrypt.
