Yeah, this sort of thing happens all the time. I have been assuming it is an artifact ... where the graphic display gets itself confused about what is actually on the screen, and it happens occasionally with almost any graphics program. However, it happens much too often with OOo. What I tell my students to do to fix it is to minimize the OOo window and then immediately restore it. Anything that re-draws the screen gets rid of the artifacts. Some window managers have a "shade" button that works quite nicely for this because you don't have to move far with your mouse.
