I have a new install of mandrake 9.1 The installation seems to have been successful apart from two problems.

The first one - which I think is now resolved - was that the install procedure was unable to find a video mode which worked. (My solution was to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and change the very low values for hsync and vsync that the automated configuration had provided to values that seem to be providing at least one working video mode. This one's a work in progress as I'm waiting for the monitor manufacturer to get back to me with the spec so I can put in reliable figures instead of having to guess!)

But the main problem is that when I try to start up the GUI all that's displayed are a variety of backgrounds which keep refreshing but not displaying anything else that's useful. Eventually it gives up and reverts to the CLI.

I found a posting on this list from a few weeks ago reporting a similar problem. It appeared the problem lay with KDE and other windows managers worked fine. The solution that was recommended was to run 'xtart' which would allow me to select another windows manager instead of KDE. However I can't find such a program on my system.

So how do I switch to a different windows manager from the CLI?

Thanks

David Bell
