I am also VERY fond of such tools. I used askSam for many years, but a
few versions had terrible reliability problems. Everything is stored
in a proprietary data base, and that got corrupted a few times. AskSam
offered to try to recover the data bases, but there was a lot of
proprietary info in there that was subject to strict non-disclosure,
and I couldn't let them do it. After losing, permanently, hundreds of
valuable documents, I looked for alternatives.

I found dtSearch, a file indexing and search tool, with built-in
viewers for many different doc types. I used it in parallel with AS
for several months, and decided I liked dtSearch enough to abandon
askSam. dtSearch keeps all files in original formats, so I can't lose
them (assuming I make regular backups). Main disadvantage is that
dtSearch is expensive. Despite that, I'm not sure I could live without
it. :-)

I have been trying to find a similar tool for Linux. I am hoping for
MUCH lower cost. :-)) Any suggestinos MUCH appreciated! dtSearch has
a Linux beta, so it will be coming.
