man lilo.conf gives:

       compact
              Tries to merge read requests for  adjacent  sectors
              into   a  single  read  request.  This  drastically
              reduces load time and keeps the map smaller.  Using
              `compact'  is  especially  recommended when booting
              from a floppy
disk.
