Where there are known problems of that type, as much info should be given as possible, and it would help if instructions on where to find identifiers could be given.
There's always some subjectivity, but for instance I would say that I use a Matrox G400, which has worked well for me under 8.2, 9.0 and 9.1, but I don't use 3D gaming, so I couldn't answer for its capabilities there.
