This is for a local net, not a busy web server. Would there be a
practical difference in copying, say, 400-500 Mb?

Sounds interesting for the data backups. Thanks. I'm still snooping
for a reliable way to do complete (and reliable) disk image backups of
the ext3's I have. It seems some programs have reliability problems
with ext3.
