Root is the Super User that can do anything - which is why Curt joked
(?) about screwing everthing up. It will, if you are careless or
unwise.

You do need administrator rights for some things, so,

if you like command-line working, when that happens you type 'su' and
are asked for the root password. When you have finished you type
'exit' and it goes back to 'being you', i.e. with normal user rights.

If you need to do things from a gui (for instance you need to change
permissions for something), open File Manager Super User Mode. Again
you will have to give the root password. Again, close it when you
have finished so that you can't make stupid mistakes (and we can all
do that, believe me).

Some programs, because they do serious things to the system, will ask
for the root password before you can use them. Mandrake Control
Center is one. Webmin - an excellent tool for configuring all sorts
of things- is another. As before, don't keep the session open longer
than you need to.
