When it is there hanging (i guess that would be hung), did you try
CTRL-ALT-F1 (or any F* dfrom F1 to F6) to see if you could get to
a pormpt?

If that doesn't work, i'd log in in rescue mode and change your
default init to level 3. This will at least let you log into the
command line where you can look for errors, etc.

In /etc/inittab, change 5 (probably) to a 3 as in id:3:initdefault:
I've included the comments to help you find the place.

# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by Mandrake Linux are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have
networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#
id:3:initdefault:

(Someone once joked that a default of 6 is like a running Win95...)

The next time you boot, you should be at a normal text screen.

You can try to start the xsession with
startx.

Then watch the messages in the terminal (which you can get back to
with the CTRL-ALT-F* keys). You will probably have logged into tty
1, so CTRL-ALT-F1

If there are too many, you might wanna try starting your xsession
with
startx 1> startx.out 2> startx.errors &

Regular messages will go to startx.out, errors to startx.errors.

See if that sheds any light?
