I challenge you to notice the difference in the performance. Most 56K HSP
devices have to be slowed to V.34 performance before they become reliable
unless you have a P-III 500 with 128Mb RAM and don't run anything else while
using your modem.
It is no fun to be using a modem program that gets swapped out to disk when
you are using a word processor while waiting for a download to complete, and
I have seen this happen to some of my compatriates who use the things
multiple times.
Of course, they blame the ISP for their modem's rotten performance, while I
seem to be the "lucky" one to get good performance. I have 14 computers
accessing the internet through ONE plain vanilla Hayes jumpered legacy 56K
V.90 modem.
