I looked at the bookmarks.xml in a text editor. It appears to keep only the URL info here. Folder info must be elsewhere; one of the other KDE config files. This might be some of the reason it's so slow with a large link file that has to be checked and matched to a folder file everytime a chnage is made or a link is added.
