I don't think it is a config problem, but a driver problem.  I don't think 
that the nv driver works with the newer cards either. Although I would agree 
that booting knoppix would be interesting to see if it loads the gui.  If you 
don't have knoppix though, you could put the old card in, get the drivers, 
swap it back and install all before you downloaded knoppix.
