Because it feels good to re-use old obsolete hardware. Alle you need is an old 486 (even a 386 if need be) stripped down to it's bare essentials....you can even take out the fans and stick 'm elsewhere:o) Besides it's easier to secure a box that only does one thing i.e. bridge to the internet. > > You only need ONE NIC to share your internet connection across a hub. > End of story. If you've got a cable modem you're better of with two. One for going outside and one for the lan, and optionally a third for a webserver (DMZ). As I've been told; bridging from LAN to internet can be done using one NIC but I never got it to work......sheer hell!!! I've got an old 3com ISA (10mb) NIC for the cable modem connection and a 10/100 (ne200)PCI nic for the LAN.......with smoothwall installed on a 486. Works so well I forget it's there:o) On top of that I've got a 386 with Slack7.0 installed (No X) that's almost ready as(apache) webserver. Good luck, HarM
