ok, been hunting around the system at different files. in the directories / >
dev > ide > host0. in the host0 directory, there's bus0 and bus1. bus0 has
target0 and target1, which would be both my hard drives on the primary ide
channel. in the bus1 folder, there's a target0 directory, then lun0
directory, then a locked hard disc icon with the name "generic." in the
properties for it, it's type is Block Device, location
/dev/ide/host0...1/target0/lun0

does this mean anything about my current problem? cause that's related to the
cdrw drive.

also in the dev directory, there's a hard disc labeled 'cdrom0.' in the
properties it's location is listed as /dev/cdroms and it says 'points to
../scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd'

but it's really on bus1, not bus0, right? because it's on the secondary ide
channel, not primary.

in the scsi directory in dev directory, there's directories host0 > bus0 >
target0 > lun0 > cd - which is a hard disc icon.

when the cd drive was on supermount, i'd put a CD in and the computer would
lock up after trying to access a cd in the drive. when put on auto mount, it
would lock up when an attempt by the user (me) was made to access it. the
caps lock and scroll lock lights would flash, number lock light would turn
off. only way to exit it was to hit the restart button.

someone asked before if my CD drive was using DMA. i forget exactly where
that file is in linux that lists all that hard ware stuff, but i believe i
saw it is listed as DMA. the CD drive IS on master, as i put it there
personally.

but see, now i've got a lot of confusion as i started opening up directories
(all the stuff above) and saw that there's mulitple targets listed for the CD
drive. wouldn't that cause a massive problem because teh system is confused
trying to access a CD drive on 2 different IDE channels when there's only one
Cd drive?

i did try to burn a CD through a command line with some coaching on the
commands, just to see what would happen. seems at track 4 (there were 13
tracks) it had an error. that could have been an error in the track itself,
i have not tried to do it again with fewer mp3 tracks or different ones (and
i don't have an MP3 player, i believe the playstation2 will do mp3 and my dvd
player might as well, but nothing else except the computer will read it). i
don't know how to convert to .wmv or .wma or whatever file, although i can
try to load songs onto the hard drive in ms-win as format other than mp3 and
try again. but much to my amazement, the "write" light on the cd drive lit
up when trying to burn a Cd through a command line.

anyone able to shed some light?

the computer is not a pre-built one. it was assembled by a friend. phillips
cd-rw drive, and it's listed as compatible.

Thanks.

Mike

btw - i've been searching online trying to see what i can find and none of it
is making complete sense to me. ultra newbie here. :)
