Stephen; I remember having the same problem. I ended up going to "download.com" and 
getting a free icon editor and a "DLL" extractor which allowed me to pull all the 
Windows icons out, and the editor allowed me to save the icons as .png files. Once 
that was done, I just copied them to my server, and used them on whatever Linux PC I 
wanted to. There's an icon editor in KDE that will allow you to make the icon 
background transparent (which is usually a gray square behind the actual icon 
graphic), so that it will not be visible when the desktop turns out to be a different 
color from your icon's background.
